Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi low provides an overwhelming range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many players battling for the high, as well as several battling for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi-low.
