Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi/low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an overwhelming collection of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, along with many shooting for the low.
