Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a few players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in almost every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, and many shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
