Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem difficult initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game simply enough.
