Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players often get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
