Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand.
