Learning Omaha Secrets
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and because you have many individuals battling for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
