Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and because you have several players shooting for the high, along with a few battling for the low hand.
