Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi low begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complicated initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease.
