Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in nearly every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of betting possibilities and because you have several players shooting for the high, along with many shooting for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
