Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical approach in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complicated at first, following a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, and many battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
