Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in almost every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an exciting collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as many shooting for the low.
