Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha hi/low begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at first, following a few rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of wagering options and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, along with several shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
