• Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Summary

    [ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha Hi-Lo starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low provides an amazing array of betting possibilities and because you have many players shooting for the high, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
