Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi-low begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the base subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high, as well as many trying for the low hand.
