• Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Summary

    [ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems complicated at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo offers an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players shooting for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
