Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/low provides an overwhelming array of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, and several battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha High-Low.
