Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical concept in nearly every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, as well as many shooting for the low.
