Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get baffled. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/low provides an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high, as well as several battling for the low.
