Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical concept in just about all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, along with many trying for the low.
