Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at the outset, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of wagering options and because you have several players shooting for the high, as well as several battling for the low.
