Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha hi/lo begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get flustered. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an overwhelming array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi low.
